Left atrial passive function after aortic valve replacement in aortic stenosis
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background Aortic valve replacement (AVR) is the definitive treatment for severe symptomatic aortic stenosis (AS). Aortic stenosis is associated with diastolic dysfunction and left atrial (LA) enlargement. After a successful AVR, there is a decrease in LA size but persistence in diatolic dysfunction. We hypothesized that LA function would help link this discordance. Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) is the gold standard for assessment of the LA. We therefore aimed to test the effect of AS on LA function and the subsequent effects of an AVR on LA function. We hypothesized that, similar to diastolic function, LA function would not improve post-AVR and that the persistence in LA dysfunction might be related to expansion of the extracellular space.

Abstract Background: Balloon valvuloplasty uses for treatment of aortic stenosis from 20 years ago. Regarding loss of information about results of balloon valvuloplasty of hereditary aortic stenosis, this study was done to determine prognosis and complication of balloon valvuloplasty during last 10 years. Methods: This study was done on existing data of all children with hereditary aortic...
متن کاملLeft atrial remodelling following transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) and surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR)
Background Left atrial (LA) size is a marker of poor prognosis in a variety of cardiovascular conditions. Severe aortic stenosis results in elevated LV afterload with compensatory hypertrophy and increased filling pressures. This is associated with progressive left atrial enlargement and dysfunction. Intervention for aortic stenosis results in LV reverse remodelling, however the effect of TAVI ...
متن کاملBicuspid Aortic Valve: An Unusual Cause of Aneurysm of Left Coronary Sinus of Valsalva
Bicuspid aortic valve is traditionally considered an innocuous congenital anomaly. Due to a better and widespread availability of non-invasive imaging techniques, it has come to the fore that 30% of these cases develop complications, viz., valve abnormality (aortic regurgitation and stenosis), and aneurysm of aortic root and ascending aorta. Sinus of Valsalva aneurysm is an uncommon complicatio...
متن کاملImprovement in mitral regurgitation after aortic valve replacement.
BACKGROUND Concomitant mitral valve regurgitation is often present in patients with aortic stenosis. The additional MV replacement is associated with high operative risk. Previous studies have shown an amelioration of MV regurgitation after aortic valve replacement but most of the patient groups were heterogenous. OBJECTIVES To determine whether AV replacement for aortic stenosis has any effe...
متن کاملAortic Stenosis: Diagnosis and Treatment.
Aortic stenosis affects 3% of persons older than 65 years. Although survival in asymptomatic patients is comparable to that in age- and sex-matched control patients, it decreases rapidly after symptoms appear. During the asymptomatic latent period, left ventricular hypertrophy and atrial augmentation of preload compensate for the increase in afterload caused by aortic stenosis. As the disease w...
